So, I like living in Las Vegas. Really, I do. There are times however when I can't stand the neighborhood I'm in. Times like this morning, when I am getting into my car at 6am to go to work, and the window has been shattered. It looks like somebody shot a bebe through it. I called Karen (because I have no clue what one does in this situation) and then I called the police. They told me that I could leave my number and an officer would call me in a day or maybe a week, or I could drive over to the local substation which opens at 8. I went to work and then went to the substation on my prep. Apparently, they don't even look at the car. I just filled out the paperwork and was out of there in 20 minutes. Then, I called the insurance company, and all they told me was that my deductible is so high it's not covered, but hey, we'll connect you with the glass place. Boy, were they helpful! So the glass repair people are coming to my work tomorrow to replace the window, for which I will have to pay $260. Of course this leaves me driving around for the rest of the day in my totally ghetto car. Every time I go over a bump I can hear pieces of glass falling out. I'm afraid that if there's a wind storm tonight I will wake up to find my entire window in pieces on the floor of my car!
To top off my fabulous day, our principal decided to announce that he's been hired somewhere else. Apparently he's going to be a lobbyist for the school district up at the state legislature in Carson City. I think he'll be great at it, but I LOVE my principal!! He's the entire reason I work at Del Sol. He IS Del Sol. Hopefully his replacement will be good. :-(
This past weekend was Relay For Life, an overnight event sponsored by the American Cancer Society. People raise money, then spend the entire night (6 pm to 6 am) taking turns walking around the track as part of their teams in support of cancer research. It's all for a good cause, but I am hoping this is the last year I have to go.
Last year I went with the Key Club and we had about 10 students. This year we had over 30 students and 3 advisers. As always with teenagers, things went a little crazily. We had many students who were late, and almost were not let in the door. We had one student leave early, without telling an adviser. The people working security somehow let 2 of our students out to go to wal-mart across the street and then let them back in. Another student managed to sneak off the field with her boyfriend (from another school) and when the other adviser didn't see her for a while, called her and found her in the boyfriend's car in the parking lot. Then, when the event was 10 minutes from being over, they wouldn't let us out of the stadium until exactly 6, even with parents honking and chaperones ready. One gate was open and when they finally noticed the people pouring out of it, they slammed it shut and started yelling at the people to go to the other gate. Of course our group was right there when they shut it, advisers on one side and students on the other.
I understand the event is for a good cause, but it's really more of a hassle than it's worth. I even have the blisters on my feet to prove it! It turns in to more of a big party for the kids than anything else. It was fun to hang out with a few of my fellow teachers, but I'm sure we could have done something else and got the same result. Anyway, my hat goes off to all those who have to deal with teenagers!!
Last weekend was the Del Sol Renaissance Fair. Of course, the Key Club spent the weekend making our fabulous funnel cake. (I have to get the picture from Patty, showcasing all my funnel cake skills!) I entered a raffle and to my complete surprise, I won this quilt!! It was made by the fashion club at Del Sol and it is absolutely gorgeous. It is our school colors and the red and gold squiggles you see are actually golden dragons and red fire, perfect for our school!
I think I have over adjusted to living in Las Vegas. It doesn't really get all that cold here, but I always seem to be freezing! Anyway, I thought I would share some of the movies I've watched recently, in case you're looking for something good to watch!
Meet the Robinson's - My roommate Mary bought this one. It is very funny and cute, just as all good Disney movies should be.
Stardust - We decided to rent this out of pure boredom, and it surprised us with how good it was! It reminds me of a cross between The Princess Bride and The Adventures of Baron Munchausen. It is a total fantasy movie, but who doesn't want to watch Robert DeNiro as a gay pirate?
Fred Clause - I went to see this over Thanksgiving with Bill and Tina. I thought it was going to be totally corny, but I was surprised. It was very funny and even had a good message.
Amazing Grace - This is a great movie, but it is a little slow. The story is about those who fought against slavery and how the song came to be written. It's a really powerful story.
August Rush - Another great story, but be prepared to cry. This is all about how music brings a family back together. I have never seen anyone play a guitar like this kid, it is absolutely amazing!!
So, Mary and I decided to decorate our apartment this year. We've never really done much, but this year we both wanted it to be cute and feel more like Christmas. Our tree is slightly pathetic, but we like it. Plus, I found my elf that my sister Kathy made me when I was 7!!
My friends Jen and Dallin came out to visit last week. They both really wanted a break from Provo, so they decided to come to Vegas. We went all around town, even going on the roller coaster at the Sahara. We also visited the Ethel M. Chocolate factory (who doesn't love chocolate!) and went to the Imperial Palace for the never-ending car show. I don't really love cars, but they had some really cool ones, and it smelled just like Grandpa Myers garage!

In case you've ever wondered, Spring Break is really for the teachers. Why would students need a break? The teacher's are the one's who're about to go postal! In Utah, they only give the teacher's 2 or 3 days off, maybe that's because the students are better. Here in Vegas, we get a whole week. We need it to recover from all the craziness! Not to worry, however, I sure know how to take full advantage of Spring Break.
