Filling In The Gaps...

So, I guess I need to fill in the gaps, since I haven't posted in a while. School and work still keep me pretty busy. I am down to only 3 more classes for my Masters degree, which I will finish up this summer. My friend Joe is the head wrestling coach at work - which is actually really funny because he knows absolutely nothing about wrestling! He decided to make me an assistant coach! I think it's a little crazy, but I can always appreciate some extra income. So, I do the paperwork and am in charge of fund raising. I help at the matches and tournaments, but it's pretty funny because they ask me all sorts of questions that I have no idea how to answer.

The holiday season went pretty well. I took Joe to the church Christmas party, which was actually pretty nice. Rick choreographed a dance number for part, and Holly sang a duet. All in all it was fun. Of course, Rick and Holly had to squash a lot of rumors about me and Joe, but I guess that's what I get for bringing a friend to a church function.

I went to Ohio for Christmas, but typical me, did not take many pictures. We flew through Minneapolis on the way there and were fortunate to not have any weather issues. We went to the Columbus Zoo one night and it was amazing to see all the lights! My favorite were the "blue herons," which Rick might be the only one to remember why I laugh at that phrase. We were able to see a lot of the animals, too, so that was nice.

It was a pretty quiet holiday, mostly spent with Joe's family. We did get up to Cincinnati to see his 'sisters' and went to visit Ohio University on another day. When we got back to Vegas we had a wrestling tournament for a few days. I am now pretty good at score keeping and yelling basic commands. I don't think the wrestlers can hear through their headgear anyway.

New Years was pretty quiet as well. We were originally going to go downtown with the principal, but those plans fell through. So, Joe and I watched movies and had a new year's cookie!

School started up this week, but UNLV hasn't started yet so I've got some free time. I spend most of it at wrestling practices and matches! I had the opportunity to go on a field trip yesterday to the Getty Villa in Malibu. Except for some issues with the bus, it was amazing! The building and surroundings are set up like a true Roman Villa. It's a museum with mostly Greek and Roman antiquities, but I was most impressed with the gardens. There were several, including an herb garden, to make it feel more real, like a real Roman villa.

After the Getty Villa, we went across the street and spent a little while at the beach. It was a little chilly, but I still love the ocean...

That's about it for now. UNLV starts up next week, so I'll probably be pretty busy between that, work and wrestling season. Hopefully no other major events come along!

Happy Birthday, Rick!

To honor Farmer Rick on his birthday, I couldn't resist making him a cupcake vegetable patch! It was a lot of fun and turned out pretty good. I even made Rick put on his gardening hat to take the picture...

Adventures, the More the Merrier...

Joe's roommate is also a friend of mine, and his birthday was the other day. I decided to try and make some interesting cupcakes. He's an FBI special agent and every time I come over, he is playing video games, so this is what I eventually came up with...
I've also been having some car problems lately. "Trixie" kept having trouble starting. She finally wouldn't start at all and I got stuck at one of the other high schools and had to have her towed to the dealership, still under warranty. After only staying overnight in the service department I got her back. Apparently my car keys have a computer chip in them and somehow my antenna stopped reading the chip in the key, some sort of anti-theft device. Had to replace the antenna and get a new key, but they paid for towing, so I got the better deal!
So, the Adventure Club decided to go to the Liberace Museum before it closes later this month. I really had no idea that there could ever be this much bling. He covered cars, shoes, pianos, and everything else in shiny rhinestones! Crazy! It was pretty fun to look at...

School Spirit...

So, we've been working at and going to a lot of school events this year. My best friend, Joe, is the school's athletic banker, which means I get roped into selling tickets at almost every home game. We've also been hitting most of the away games, even though our team isn't doing so well this year.Of course, I still help out the Key Club when I can. Here they are at the Regional Training Conference participating in the spirit rally. They came in 2nd place for our division for their cheers. Not bad for one of the smaller groups there!
Some of us at work have to carry radios and have decided that we want to stand out. For the last 2 years, I have had a Jack-in-the-box antenna topper with a propeller beanie on it that Bill bought me. I figured that represented special education pretty well. My friend Ramiro went to Disneyland and bought me this one - I think it's hilarious considering the students I work with!

All Work and No Play...

So, school started... all I can say is BLAH. It's been a rough year so far. The school district has decided to play musical administration, and we got the worst deal - lost two great APs and got two that no one else would take. I've also had to deal with a lot of teacher craziness this year, which is starting to stress me out. The Adventure Club decided to go hiking a while back, which of course I forgot to take pictures of, but I think there are some on Rick's blog. On the way back into town, some of us decided to stop at The Resort at Mt. Charleston. It has a nice view and some fun picture opportunities...

Good Times, Awesomeness and Hugs...

Not a whole lot going on lately. I've been going in to work here and there to get ready for the upcoming school year. I officially start back tomorrow, while the kids start school next week. I think it's going to be a good year, hopefully all my new teachers work out.

I been trying to cram as much fun as possible into the last couple weeks of summer. A few pool parties, shopping trips to the outlet malls, playing Just Dance on the Wii and just hanging out with friends. My classes at UNLV start this week too, so I am going to be pretty busy. The other day, Rick had gotten free tickets at work for the new Nanny McPhee movie. The tickets had the wrong date printed, so Holly called the theater and they told her the event was that night. So, Rick, Holly, Joe, Donita and I all get down there and the theater tells us that the event was two days ago. We tell them that Holly called and someone told her it was that night, and they kept trying to tell us that they are not responsible for misprints. After talking to two different managers, they finally let us pick a movie to watch for free. We eventually decided to see Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. It was pretty funny, especially if you know your video games. There's a lot of music, fighting styles and boss stereotypes that come straight from old video games.

I also somehow got comandeered into making a wedding cake this weekend. Although I did want to know how to know how to at some point, this was not how I intended on learning. I made a white wedding cake from a recipe on the internet. Then I filled it with a raspberry filling I made. I am not too great at making frosting smooth, so I decided to cover it with fondant...Covering a cake with fondant is easier and harder than I thought. I had some trouble leveling the cake, mostly because I couldn't afford a cake leveler. Plus, covering the cake in frosting after cutting it is hard because the frosting doesn't want to stick to all the crumbs.
This is what the cake looked like in the end. It was a pretty small wedding, so luckily I only needed a small cake. They didn't really have any colors, so I was trying to make a hot pink and teal. They didn't come out quite right and Rick kept telling me it looked like a baby cake. So, I added ribbon and flowers to make it look more like a wedding cake.


So, the final cake - white cake with raspberry filling, white chocolate buttercream frosting, covered with fondant. Everyone seemed to really like it. I don't know that I'll be making anymore wedding cakes, but it was fun and I definitely learned a lot.

Random Sightings...

So, the other day I was helping my friend Joe show some friends around downtown. We decided to hit some of our favorite spots, starting with the conservatory at the Belaggio. Apparently there's some sort of new trend for people to dress up and pose for pictures outside at the fountains. While we were there we saw the Blues Brothers, two Elvis impersonators, two members of KISS, two showgirls, the Mad Hatter, and an Angel and Devil pair. I don't know if these people have regular jobs or if they are trying to make some money in this economy. All these impersonators just started showing up last year. After the fountains we went over to Serendipity for a little frozen hot chocolate, which may be the best invention ever. I saw the guy making it, so I'm thinking I can figure out how to make it at home. We also went over to Fremont Street to watch the show. There we saw a Darth Vader and a Zorro. I think these guys put a little more thought into the whole costume thing. Darth Vader had a couple light sabers so that people could pose fighting him. Zorro also had a couple swords for the same reason. I actually think these people are pretty smart, because where else do you find so many tourists and have a shot at making decent tip money for this kind of thing? You gotta love Las Vegas!
